Practical Nurses perform a full range of hands-on patient care. Practical nurses are concerned with the basic therapeutic, rehabilitative, and preventative care of people of all ages and different cultures.
Graduates of the Practical Nursing Program, who pass state licensure and are designated Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN), will be prepared to care for the sick, injured, convalescing, and handicapped under the direction of physicians and registered nurses.
Practical nurses provide basic bedside care performing nursing procedures including taking vital signs, giving injections, applying dressings, and helping patients with activities of daily living. LPN’s observe patients and report adverse reactions to medications and treatments.
They collect samples from patients for testing, perform routine laboratory tests, record food and liquid intake and output. L.P.N.’s help patients with bathing, dressing and personal hygiene as well as maintain the patients comfort level, and care for their emotional needs.
Additionally, they keep accurate medical records, develop and/or implement plans of care, and perform other clerical duties. Practical Nurses work in a variety of settings including hospitals, nursing homes, physician offices, home health agencies, residential care facilities, and clinics. A growing number of Licensed Practical Nurses will provide health care in the home as opposed to a medical facility.
After successful completion of the program, graduates will be eligible to apply to take the State of Missouri examination to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.
